 2018 Preview 


       Highland Home completed the 2017 season with a 7-4 record. With their 4-2 region record and a third place finish in Class 1A region three, the Flying Squadron earned a spot in the playoffs in 2017. Highland Home's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Marengo by a score of 50-0.

       The Flying Squadron improved in 2017 with their first winning season since 2013. The Flying Squadron won as many games as in any season since 2011. It marked the first time since the 2013 season that the Flying Squadron qualified for the playoffs.

       Highland Home had a very good offense last year, scoring 39.4 points per game, but it couldn't keep up with a defense that gave up 38.5 points per game.

       Since 2010, Highland Home has gone a combined 41-43. Their 49.0% winning percentage ranks 30th in Class 2A over the past eight seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Highland Home has managed to compile a record of 148-117. Their 56.0% winning percentage ranks 17th in Class 2A and 130th in the AHSAA.




       The Flying Squadron are led by head coach Phillip Coggins who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 7-4 record in his first season at Highland Home. The Flying Squadron saw improvement from a 3-7 record the season before coach Coggins arrived. Under his direction the Flying Squadron have qualified for the playoffs once. They have not won a region crown with Coach Coggins.

       Coach Coggins' overall record as a head football coach in one season stands at 7-4 (63.6%).

       The Highland Home Flying Squadron will play in Class 2A region three during the 2018 season. The Flying Squadron move up in classification to Class 2A. They may find the going slightly tougher with the move.

       The Flying Squadron enter the 2018 season riding a 6 game regular season winning streak.

       The Flying Squadron will be in the mix for one of the last two playoff spots in region three this season.

       The Flying Squadron open the 2018 season on the road against non-region opponent Headland on Friday, August 31 at J.J. Yarborough Stadium. Last year the Headland Rams finished with an overall record of 1-9 and in seventh place in Class 5A region two. The Rams closed out the regular season with a loss to Abbeville by a score of 28-18.

       Highland Home and Headland have met a total of 2 times on the football field. The Flying Squadron have a 0-2-0 record against the Rams. They last met in with

  


Great Moments in Alabama High School Football History

Parrish scored a record 77 points in a playoff game against Cedar Bluff in 2001. The Tornados were shutout the following week 19-0 by Courtland.
